The Federation of British Artists Selectors Choice 2008

I tried to imagine the thoughts and feelings that would race through the mind of someone who is being consumed by fire – caught between the two worlds of life and death – the panic associated with the instinct to stay alive and the terror of losing one’s life.

Winner of the £10,000 FBA Selectors Choice Award, Tim Shaw was born in Belfast and always wanted to be a sculptor. He studied at Falmouth College of Art and is now based in Cornwall. His work Tank on Fire was inspired by a 2005 photo image showing a British Soldier in Iraq leaping to the ground from a burning Warrior vehicle.

His work often engages directly with contemporary issues and regularly confronts the complex social and political issues generated by the ‘war on terror’ as well as exploring themes of death, myth and mystery.

Tim has won numerous awards and accolades, including the Kenneth Armitage Fellowship.
